Short History of the Institute

Zoological researches in Georgia started in 1932 when Transcaucasus Zoological Sector was founded. Then it was changed into the branch of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. Later in 1937 the Embryological Sector was formed. In 1941 on the basis of them the Institute of Zoology of the Academy of Sciences of Georgia was established. It was headed by the famous Transcaucasus Entomofauna Researcher, Academician of the Academy of Sciences of Georgia P.A. Zaitsev.

The directors of the Institute in different times were:
Acad. F. Zaitsev 1941 - 1957. Doctor of Biological sciences prof. O. Kobakhidze 1957 - 1964.
The corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of Georgia - B. Kurashvili 1964 - 1989. The corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of Georgia - I. Eliava 1989 - 2005.

For today Institute carries out researches in following directions: Biodiversity of Invertebrate and Vertebrate Animals Systematics (using karyological and biochemical methods), Zoogeography, Ecology, Evolution, Problems of Reintroduction and Preservation, in addition of these there are studies in Entomo and Animal Parasitofauna, Natural and Storage Lakes of Georgia, River Ecosystems and their Bioproductivities.
